In the scene in The Avengers when Loki and Thor are battling it out on Stark Tower, and Thor tells Loki to look around and see the destruction he has brought, Loki legitimately looks frightened. I think that’s something brilliant about Tom Hiddleston’s acting; in each diverse role he plays, you can see the emotions of the characters he portrays through his eyes. That look of knowing as Nicholls in War Horse, or how Loki’s pain, sadness, and fears speak volumes through just his eyes. They say eyes are the windows to the soul, and Hiddleston is fantastic in allowing the audience to take a glimpse into the souls of his characters and see what plagues them deep beneath the surface.

I think what really got me was when Loki did look around at the destruction, told Thor that it was “too late,” and you can see him almost waver between going on with his plans or giving in, while tears are welling up. What really made it worse is after he stabs Thor, he mutters harshly, “Sentiment,” just as a tear rolls down his cheek. Sure he snarls that comment, sure he stabs Thor, sure he still has a sneer on his lips, but none of that matters because his eyes say infinitely more.

I can’t exactly remember who said this, but someone did make a comment that what Loki does is out of hurt, not hate. So far, I haven’t actually seen any Loki haters, but sometimes I think even fans can misunderstand him. Like everyone says, no one better understands and “has more feels” for Loki than Tom Hiddleston does, and that is reflected in the passion and strong emotions displayed in his performance
